New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans was founded by the French in 1718. It was named for Philippe II, Duke of Orléans who was the Regent of France. It was given to the Spanish in 1763 and remained under the control of the Spanish for 40 years. It was taken over again by the French in 1801 and was then sold to the United States by Napoleon. New Orleans was a principle port along the slave trade and by 1840 was the wealthiest city in the nation. In 2005 New Orleans was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.
